Sensei Steve began his martial arts journey at 17, training in Kyokushinkai Karate in Australia — drawn to its demanding training ethic and no-nonsense full-contact sparring. When his instructor moved on, he explored other styles before discovering Ju-Jitsu and was immediately captivated by its throws, sweeps and locks.
What set Ju-Jitsu apart for Steve was both its technical depth and its practical self-defence philosophy — and the family atmosphere of the dojo, under the tutelage of Master Jan De Jong, which was a world away from the rigid militarism of Karate.
Returning to the UK, Steve trained under Sensei Martin Molsley of the World Ju-Jitsu Federation in Dronfield, then with Sensei Steve Elliot in Chesterfield — a relationship spanning over 25 years.
Today, Sensei Steve brings that same family ethos to every NMAA class — a dojo where everyone helps each other, there are no cliques on the mat, and practitioners of any background and style are always welcome.
We're not just teaching techniques — we're building better people.
Every student, whatever their age or background, is made to feel at home from day one. No experience required — ever.
Our adult and junior programmes teach practical, legal self-defence techniques grounded in Ju Jitsu, not just sport martial arts.
Students consistently report improvements not just in fitness but in self-esteem, focus, and resilience — at school, at work, and at home.
Come and try it with zero commitment. We want you to love it before you sign up for anything.

Great place to be and spend time with kids. The instructors are patient, encouraging and clearly know their stuff. I highly recommend it.
An amazing club to help with confidence, learn new skills and make new friends. My son looks forward to every session. Highly recommend.
I started as a complete beginner and felt welcomed immediately. The adult self-defence classes are practical, interesting and a great workout too.
